The laboratory is divided in four main sections: stable isotopes (responsible : Mauro Brilli), natural radioactivity (responsible : Mario Voltaggio) and environmental geochemistry (responsible : Giancarlo Ciotoli), heavy isotopes (responsible : Francesca Castorina).
The laboratory focuses on geochemical characterization of soils, rocks, waters and soil gasses. Customary work includes different extraction techniques on solid matrices and the study of fractionation of Sr, Nd, O, C, N and H in rocks and water environment.
Stable isotope studies for geological, vulcanological, biological, environmental and archaeological applications.
Gas-chromatographic analyses are mainly focused on the composition of soil gases in peri-volcanic areas.
The Laboratory provides characterization of the radiochemical properties of rocks, soils and waters, including the definition of isotopic ratios, dating and isotopic disequilibria.
Analyses are carried out with an alfa spectrometer and two gamma spectrometer HPGe with planar and coaxial configurations.
We also have portable gamma spectrometers and dosimeters to be used in the field work.
Measurements of Radon and its progeny in air, water and soil are carried out using passive accumulators and a portable radonometer.
