The Fiumicino mud volcano

The Fiumicino mud volcano: as is well known and documented by numerous mass media, on the morning of August 24, 2013 a small volcano of mud and gas has suddenly developed near the airport Leonardo Da Vinci in Fiumicino (Rome). The volcano has flooded with mud and water the Coccia di Morto roundabout and continued to emit fluids up to January-February 2014 when the volcano was closed permanently with cement. The factor triggering such issue was anthropogenic. It was, in particular, the drilling of a geognostic survey of a few tens of meters deep inside the Coccia di Morto roundabout
 
Scientific and historical studies have revealed that previous manifestations similar to that of August 24, 2013 have occurred several times in Fiumicino. In 2005, the drilling of a geognostic borehole only a few hundred meters from the Coccia di Morto roundabout suddenly opened the way to the issue of carbon dioxide and other gases. Recently, some historical geoscientists have documented that similar phenomena occurred with certainty in 1925 and in 1890, respectively, during the construction of a glassworks factory in Fiumicino (1925) and during the geognostic campaign of the construction of a water-pumping plant of Ostia (1890) (http://www.geoitaliani.it/2013/10/1925-leruzione-di-fiumicino.html).
 
The culprit of these events is the gas (mainly carbon dioxide) under pressure into the ground leading to the surface water and mud when boreholes or excavations facilitates the ascent. It is therefore essential to know where the gas accumulates to properly manage and prevent such occurrences.
 
IGAG’s researchers have followed the phenomenon that was triggered in August 2013, and, thanks to a series of geological surveys, found where the pressurized gas accumulates, where it comes from and how it propagates upward to the surface. The scientific results are now available in three recent publications in international journals:
